Twelve-year-old Olivia “Oli” Jones lives in the backwoods of rural Alabama, where she enjoys fishing and riding her bike. Her best friend Bartholomew (Mo) tries to help her make sense of her unusual life. They share a deeply wounding sadness that they bear together as only best friends can. Wanting nothing more than a “normal” childhood, when the opportunity comes to find the fathers they thought they were abandoned by, they chase it with reckless abandon. One hot summer’s day, they discover that Mo’s father is alive and living in a city several towns over.
The two friends devise a plan to find him without telling their mothers. When a sudden tragedy strikes, Oli is forced to continue the journey alone.
