Phillip A. Brown – Writer

Phillip A. Brown grew up a second generation San Diego, CA native. Both sets of his grandparents lived within 1 1/2 miles of his childhood home. Though knowing to have lived a quintessential American life, he came to know as a young adult that many in his community were not as fortunate. His father and grandfather created businesses that catered to, and employed members of the Black community which paved the way for Phil to acquire mentors and role models who helped shape him and give him an understanding of who he is.

For more than 4 decades Phil used his gifts, talents, and skills to create a positive economic difference in urban underserved communities. He empowered himself through historical knowledge of self (Black history), and the power of entrepreneurship/ small business development, using cooperative business incubation systems.

Throughout his journey there’s been a central theme – – community empowerment. Teaching young African American children, teamwork – self discipline – confidence – respect, through sports, and through business modeling. His passion is for entrepreneurship, community economic development and African American history. These have been the guide posts for his life’s work. In 2013 his father (the late Jim Brown 11/2020) passed the work of Gateway Educational Foundation to Phil and his wife Lisa. “Olivia Jones”, a story centered in the history of Alabama – is an extension of Gateway’s work.
